Guess Who's Back...Back Again?

Eminem (aka Slim Shady) said it best. We are back and ready to blog.

We are in the midst of finals week of our last semester of our undergraduate schooling. Let's be honest, I'm blogging right now to procrastinate.

Life this semester has been crazy, but great. We're living in an apartment off-campus, going to school daily, becoming teachers, and enjoying life every step of the way.

our last first day of school....

Rest in Peace Coach John Wooden

On June 4th, 2010, Coach John Wooden, age 99, passed away.

News of his passing reached me the day before his actual death (due to unreliable sources; thanks Jimmy...aka harbinger of doom). But it actually turned out better that way so that I could prepare myself for the news that would come of his actual death. I was filled with more sadness than I anticipated.

Myself, and my fellow Elizabeth, are big fans of Coach Wooden, his teaching, his coaching, and his life.

If you are not familiar with who John Wooden is, he was a former coach for UCLA basketball. He led the team to 10 national championships in 12 years. Wooden was the first person to be in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach. He has been named the Greatest Coach of All Time.
"I consider it a sacred trust: helping to mold character, instill productive principles and values, and provide a positive example to those under my supervision. Furthermore, it is a privilege to have that responsibility, opportunity, and obligation, one that should never be taken lightly."
"Your reaction to victory or defeat is an important part of how you play the game. I wanted my players to display style and class in either situation--to lose with grace, to win with humility."
Wooden was also a teacher; not only to his players but others as well. He taught many of his players what the true meanings of life were, and that basketball was not the most important thing in life.
"Basketball is just a game, but if I was doing my job as a coach that game of basketball would help our players by preparing them to do well in life, to reach their full potential as individuals. When they did that, I felt very proud as a coach. That's more rewarding to me than all the championships and titles and awards."
"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Character is what you really are. Reputation is what people say you are. Reputation is often based on character--but not always"

His Pyramid of Success is something that he is extremely well-known for and is taught in classrooms as well as in sports. He coined his own definition of success in 1934...
"Success is the peace of mind that is the direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming."
Although he was a famous coach and teacher, Wooden always had his priorities right and put family and faith first. He married the love of his life, Nellie. And even though she passed away on March 21, 1985, he still visited her grave the 21st of every month and wrote her love notes as well. He is survived by his son, his daughter, 7 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
"A parent can help direct a child when it comes to goals. Show leadership. Show discipline. Show industriousness. Have traditional values. The person you are is the person your child will become."
"The greatest word in the whole dictionary is love. Love your children. Listen to them. Share with them. Remember that love is the most powerful medicine in the world."
"I have always tried to make it clear that basketball is not the ultimate. It is of small importance in comparison to the total life we live. There is only one kind of life that truly wins, and that is the one that places faith in the hands of the Savior."
Wooden ends one of his books with , "I believe that all of us have within us the building blocks of success. The potential within each of us waiting to come forth. That's what you must always keep in mind. You have success within. It's up to you to bring it out. I've been trying to dhat in my own life for over eighty years. I will continue each day to strive for that until the moment the Good Lord calls me to be with my dear Nellie again."

See you in heaven Coach Wooden.

Puma shoes.

Puma shoes.

So, I played tennis the other night with my dad and brother. BTW, my dad is REALLY good at tennis and John is getting better. I decided to wear my old white puma shoes...BIG MISTAKE. Right when we started playing, I told my dad, "wow, there's sticky stuff on the ground...it's helping me get good grip!".... but, then I started noticing white clear stuff on the ground. Sure enough, the bottom of my shoes were falling off. I ended up playing with my pumas for half-an-hour, but then my feet couldn't do the "half-my-shoe-is-off" hurting, so I had to quit early :(

-Here are the shoes torn up on the bottom. And don't worry, I threw them away right after playing. Goodbye pumas.

Guess Who?

Well... I have not posted on this thing in quite some time. It has always been the other Elizabeth. I'm not quite sure why I haven't written, but I think because not much in my life has happened that can top the crazy weekend I wrote about.

To be honest...nothing has happened for me to even write this post. But since we share the blog, I figured I would make an appearance.

Finals went well. Summer has been great so far. I have not really done too much, but that can be nice at times. I feel like I have a lot on my mind (I think summer does that to me), but not much to say.

ohh...something to share...me and elizabeth did some photobooth photo shoots at both starbucks and our last night in our room...

Habbakkuk

I read this passage this morning and was so moved by it. So often I find myself in low seasons, where things don't seem to be going my way. That is the time that I can rejoice because God is unchanging. My challenge is to still be JOYful when my life is chaotic.

Habbakkuk 3:17-19 says,
“Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.
The Sovereign Lord is my strength;
He makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
He enables me to go on the heights”.

Oh, and just a fun quote I read:
“May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” -Edward Abbey

Hannah Moore

A little tradition-ish thing that we have been so VERY lucky to be a part of while living in Suite B of VK is Hannah, our suitemate, coming in right before we go to bed, so like before 11--gotta love my sleep-- and she'll read us a poem in an Irish accent! She's phenomenal at it. PS--> Look at Annemarie and Betsy's approval faces at the end...priceless!

:)

John and Sean (aka my brothers) won the Golden Eagle Scholar Athlete awards from Track and Cross Country--respectively. The ceremony and dinner was at the Fess Parker and it was wonderful! My parents came up and all the award winners gave a 4 minute speech. John and Sean rocked it, as did all the award winners. Halibut for dinner and great conversation! I'm so proud!

This is right before Betsy tried to explain Twilight to me... VERY entertaining... and I videoed it too... :)

Crazy Crazy Weekend

Where to begin? This weekend has been crazy and full of fun and random events...

Friday: this was the day of Nikki's 21st birthday extravaganza! So she went on a scavenger hunt and found us at different locations around the area. She found us at the bird estuary, which is way pretty. Then we drove to Ventura and ate dinner at this really nice Italian place. It was fun to celebrate Nikki's birthday!
When we were getting into our car in the parking garage, we saw a fight between a guy and a girl. So Amy called the police and reported the case while we watched from inside the car. They were fighting and pushing each other and then the guy punched the girl in the face. He then got in his car and drove away, and the girl kicked his car and then later left in another car. Luckily Caity got his license plate number and the police were able to catch the car. Three police cars then came and talked to us because we were witnesses. It was a crazy, but fun night.

Saturday: Or Elizabeth's Day of Birth!! We woke her up at midnight and gave her some of her favorite foods!!
I, then, got up really early and left for Newport to go sailing! Amy's dad's friend has a boat and house on the newport harbor, so we were able to go on this really nice boat. We were out for a few hours and then came back and went on a duffy which took us around the harbor. We then walked around South Coast Plaza and ate sushi before heading back to school.

Sunday: I decided to not go to church this morning because I hadn't done any homework all weekend, and I have a lot. And I decided to go to Starbucks instead of Coffee Bean, which is also unusual. When I got to Starbucks, there was no tables for me to sit at, except one with this old man, so I asked him if I could sit there and he said of course. I was trying to get my homework done, but he kept on asking me questions, like he wanted to talk to me, so I decided to listen to him because he would probably have a cool story to share. He ended up showing me this book with many of his accomplishments, which was a bit weird to me. But he had pictures of him with both Bush Presidents and a few other very famous people. I thought he might be a scam, or wanting me to just buy his book, but the more and more he talked, the more real he seemed. He has met many famous people and has been honored by many colleges and people in the government. He ended up being extremely nice to me, and I enjoyed talking to him. He then left and went to order a drink, but came back to give me a Starbucks mug he bought for me! It was so crazy! I called my mom so she could google him, and he has given a ton of money to the republican party and is a philanthropist. Needless to say...it was a crazy morning.

It has been a great great weekend! And although this week might be a bit more busy because of this weekend, I am okay with that!

age.

-So here is my grandpa, age 90, sending out his first e-mail of his life! Let me tell you, it was the cutest thing ever. Yeah, it took like 20 minutes to write a one sentence e-mail, but props to him! And this was right before the 7.2 earthquake. Gotta love my grandpa. His response after sending the e-mail is, "Maybe I should get a labtop computer".... we all laughed and I said, "Whoa, don't get ahead of yourself". My grandpa is a wise and funny man.

-I went on a walk at Crystal Cove with my parents the day before easter. I had to appreciate the pretty flowers.

and hellllooooo april...

Well it is now the month of April, which according to the ole' tune...should bring showers.

This is our last month of this school year because we get out early May. So soon it will be hellooo summer.

Today was Easter Sunday, which is a day of remembering what our Savior did for us.
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.--Romans 6:8-11

Today I spent time with family hanging out, talking, and laughing. It was a great time and I am so grateful for friends and family.

He is risen! He is risen indeed!

goodbye March.

I have an excuse for not blogging. I tried to last week, but got a virus on my computer when I tried... so I laid low for a little. But don't fear, I fought back and am blogging now :)

-Spring Sing was so much fun and the show overall totally pushed the envelope. VK women didn't win, but me and my roommates had a great time. Betsy and I were blue dinosaurs and Annemarie was a pig-->symbolizing, H1N1 virus.

-So I have been looking thorugh old pictures and found some precious gems. I think I'll share them with you...enJOY and don't judge too much!

Inspriational quotes:

Our Week Thus Far...

Although it's only Tuesday, our week has been jam-packed.

First things first....SPRING SING.
I (Betsy) was not planning on doing spring sing this year, and i was just going to watch. But my fellow Elizabeth put on a sad face and I told her I would attend the meeting, but wouldn't make any promises. Of course, once I got to the meeting I started learning the dances and what do ya know? I'm in a dance.
Today we had our DC rehearsal in front of the committee and they loved it. We got a standing ovation from a few of them (surprised me and elizabeth because we didn't think it was that great).
So the rest of the week we'll be perfecting our dance, getting our costumes together, and presenting on the big stage!

Other things that have been happening....
Elizabeth started basketball practice again and have been doing intense P3 workouts. (such a star)

...that's all really. Not much has been happening.

an end and a beginning

well....spring break 2010 is coming to a close.
It's been a lazy break, but sometimes those can be the best. In the beginning of the week I hung out with my mom lots, which was great. But then she left for Texas and I didn't really have an excuse to not hang out with people. I think it's just I knew that I would be meeting new people, and I didn't really want to meet new people who I would then have to leave until summer (and let's be honest, they would probably forget who I was by summer). But I did go out a few times and it was fun. I had my first experience in a pub...conclusion...not my place.

I watched a tonnn of crime shows...criminal minds and law and order SVU. Watching these reaffirms my wanting to be a detective, but also reminds me that it wouldn't happen. I even watched this 20/20 episode about a crime (crazy internet chatrooms).

one of the only pictures i have to document SB10 (spring break 2010)

I head back to school tomorrow...which embarks us on a journey of the last bit of the semester. Spring Semester goes by so fast. It's just event, event, break, event, break, event, finals, done. It is so crazy to think that once this semester is done, I'm 75% done with school. The people who say "time flies" really know what they're talking about.
This week is Spring Sing week...which is a week of madness i'm trying to avoid.... (spring sing pictures from the past 2 years)

ohhhh speaking of madness...my march madness bracket is going down the drain. The other people who say "beginner's luck" must have never made a bracket, because I definitely don't have that. The team I picked to win the whole thing, lost 2nd round; RIP Kansas. And a team I picked for the final four, also lost; RIP Villanova. My other Elizabeth...I believe you might win this bet. But another Bachelor(ette) season is on this summer...so prepare to go down. (ps. this is what i deserve for betting and for being so competitive)

so as this week o' fun comes to an end...a beginning of an end of a semester begins. Can't wait to see what it holds

It's all about Perspective.

and enjoy the picture....Betsy's an AVATAR :)
Wow... this blog is 100% overdue. So much to say. So, I'm just going to touch on a few thngs.

First off, I was inspired by Dakota Mahan's blue hat he wears all the time. It's a simple hat with a whale on it and the two words, "Live simply". I appreciate his hat so much--how true is it. Life is full of complex ideas, problems, issues. Yet, life is so much more enjoyable when you see joy in the little things. Some little things I have come to appreciate and love: thoughtfulness, sunsets, roommates, teammates, wise advice from older people, Professors, deep conversation, letters, sleep, vanilla lattes, family, friends, the beach, and so much more. Something fellow Elizabeth and I have come to love and appreciate=FLOSSING. It's a massage for your mouth :)

After a fun-filled day where Annemarie and I beat Tyler and Dakota in a game of beach volleyball (shout out Amers), we four headed up to L.A. for the night because we had tickets to "The Price is Right" taping at 8:30am in the morning. Long story short, our reserved tickets Anne got weeks in advance meant nothing and we didn't get on the shoe :(. Dakota made awesome v-neck shirts for it though! The four of us did enjoy the day in LA. I had to leave early, but the three of them tried to get on the 4pm taping of "The Price is Right"--yet failed again. I know that they were all frustrated and I even told them I would blog for therapy and venting reasons. But, my perspective changed on the situation when late that night I found out one of my boss's at work during the summer died from a massive heart attack at the gym. My heart and prayers goes out to the family. So tragic and unexpected. It is funny how we were all so caught up in our anger for not getting on the show. But, I was humbly reminded about what really matters in life.

As Betsy said below.. it's March and full of wonderful Madness. Yes, we have a bet going on between our brackets.... both of us are super competitive people. So, we'll see who comes out on top. Out last competition, I lost--Betsy called Vienna winning the Bachelor, and I thought Tenley would win.

So, I feel as though I BARELY touched the surface of things running around in my mind. Spring break has been wonderful and full of sunshine, friends, family, good food, nature, and adventures! Take in today--it's a blessing. And remember, put things in perspective....

Spring Forward....Spring Break...

Well Spring Break has officially begun...since we finished all that CSET business yesterday.

Yesterday was suchhh a crazy day...
My day began at 6 o'clock when i woke for the CSET. I got ready, ate breakfast, and then drove over to the test site. When I get there, I am super nervous because I know nobody. To make things worse...i forgot my wallet and identification is needed to take the test. Luckily, my lovely mother brought it for me and then i signed my life away (with a thumbprint) and took the test for 6 hours or so.
After the test I went with my church to help this local church planter with gardening and cleaning of their house. I love that my church does things like this. We use our actions as worship for God, which I think so many people need to do more. We should BE the church rather than just GO to church. We all went out to dinner this place that claims that they have "The World's Best Burger." Didn't think it was the World's Best...but it was quite tasty.
I then rushed home so that I could get ready for my friend's engagement party. Guess who's a bridesmaid? That's right...I'm going to be a bridesmaid for the first time. It's weird to think about, but it should be fun.
So 2.5 energy drinks later, my day came to an end and it was a good day.

Today was way less busy...laying out by the pool, napping, and hanging out with good friends at Annemarie's house.

Whatever tomorrow holds should be great as well...

such a day as THIS.

There's nothing like the present. What a beautiful gift we are given each day.
Although today was a long day of CSET testing (shout out to the Liberal Studies cult ladies--you know who you are), I found myself appreciateing little things.
Inspirational quote I read on the wall while taking the CSET:
"The perfect day doesn't always have to do with the weather"
^I'm a sucker for quotes like that^
-Wonderful lunch with Annemarie... a random older man lectured us at Taco Bell about writing for about ten minutes. He suggested we don't use adverbs in our writing. I beg to differ.
-The drive home was beautiful with mountains on my left and the ocean on my right :)
-Hung out with the a bunch of friends and enjoyed the fellowship. Thank the Lord for friends.

PS--> Shout out to you Betsy. Missed you!

win or learn from it.

Elizabeth Mary's thoughts:
Today was a gift--a gift of memories. My day started consisted of eating breakfast with Hillary, one class ending an hour early, and my other class being cancelled. I took advantage of my extra time and ran the stairs at SBCC. Talk about a BEAUTIFUL DAYYY! And and extra perk: I saw Phil Dalhausser--the 2008 Beijing Summer Olymic Games Beach Volleyball Gold Medalist!
-I had dinner with a close friend and enjoyed the company, the deep coversation, delicious food, and seeing how struggles can turn into growth through the grace of God.
-And to top things off, I jacuzzied with my fellow Elizabeth and Annemarie :) such a joy, yet spooky in the dark.
-Us Elizabeth's went to Vons on the way back to our room and ran into Max and Brian. Wonderful memories built at Vons... expecially Betsy almost stepping on a worm (I'll post a picture of it soon).

Here's a perspective for the day:
-You either win or you learn from it. I was taught this idea in a devo by Megan Fate before one fo our basketball games. Look at losing as a disguise to improve, learn, grow, and develop.

Oh and as soooo many of you followers have requested, here is the quote for the day, yet it was said yeterday:
"Geometry may not be as sexy as political science...but you need both"-one of my Professors that will go unnamed.

CSET=lame

Us Elizabeths are at this beautiful house that our roommate is house-sitting for studying for the CSET. We have been studying wayyyy too long for this test and I don't know about my fellow Elizabeth, but my brain is fried to the bones.
We take this test on Saturday...so soon studying will come to a close and we can continue on with our normal, non-CSET studying lives.

Reason for Blogging

Helllooooo blogworld. It's just the two Elizabeths here who decided to create this blog.

Reasons for doing it...
...to write down the funny or quirky moments
...to express our thoughts
...crack some jokes
...give insight
...tell of our lives
...give inspiration
...and who knows what else.

One might wonder, why is your blog titled "Elizabeth to the bones"? Well for those people, we decided to title our blog like this because we're both Elizabeths and we add "to the bones" to the end of statements to add emphasis. (For example, when we're really hungry, we'll say "i'm hungry to the bones")

We are really excited to see where this blog takes us in our everyday lives...
We may update individually or together...it depends on the situation.
